Work on the album began around 2012, but accelerated as more producers got involved in Ye's next project the following year. Despite that, some people did share info back in 2013 months before Yeezus's release. Much of the public didn't know until early 2020, when designer Joe Perez shared unused artwork from that era. Thank God For Drugs was the early title for what would become Yeezus, Kanye's experimental album that was released on X, 2013. It too was cancelled - as was its successor Yandhi - until Ye dropped the album Jesus Is King in 2019, which bears no similarity to the 2018 GAJ. Plans got derailed again - this time for good - when Kanye interrupted the VMAs and caused a media frenzy on him that led him to a self-imposed exile where he produced My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ( 2010).Įight years later, Ye teased a joint album with Chance The Rapper called Good Ass Job, but that is considered a separate project altogether. Leaks have surfaced from the post-808s era, indicating that the album was actually worked on this time around. It has been said that Kanye was ready to get back on schedule and release Good Ass Job after 808s. Plans got derailed quickly when his mother passed away in November 2007 from a botched surgery, which directly led to the release of 808s & Heartbreak ( 2008) instead.
